A comparable headdress published by Cole on a field photo from the 1940s. The photo shows that the disproportionately large hands once held ritual staffs. Concerning the use of the headdresses, Cole suspects a connection with the “owu” cult of water spirits. Stylistically, the headdress shows echoes of works by the Ogoni and Ibibio.
