Depicted is a scene from the life of Shinran, the founder of the Jodo Shinshu school of Buddhism. According to legend, Shinran traveled through Japan to spread his teachings. On one occasion, he was denied a place to sleep, whereupon he spent the night outside in the snow, using a stone as a pillow.
