Description

10 pieces, gypsum/light clay, various sizes (h: 23-36 cm), brown patina/resp. dyed with colourful pigments, partly with brass tag decor, various appendages (brass rings, plant fibre tassels, animal horns, seed capsules etc.), seven replicas of African masks (in style of the Baule/“Master from Buafle”, the Ngere/Wobe, the Guro/Baule, the Bamana and the Yoruba), two replicas in style of Japanese masks and one replica of a Sepik mask from Papua New Guinea, slightly dam.;
This compilation are reproductions of masks from the Ludwig Leicher collection. Whether he made them himself or they were produced on commission, can no longer be ascertained. A whole series of masks from his collection were published by J. Glück, Baden-Baden, in 1956.
