Figure of the god of wealth, Jambhala (Kubera), mid/late 10th to early 11th century · Indonesia - Java · ID: 3053719
Description
bronze alloy,
The deity of wealth, known in its Buddhist form as “Jambhala” and in the Hindu tradition as “Kubera”, is seated in “Lalitasana”, the posture of royal ease. In his right hand he holds a lotus, symbolizing spiritual purity and abundance, while in his left he holds a “Bijapuraka”, a citron associated with prosperity.
In ancient Java, the Buddhist and Hindu forms of the deity could merge iconographically. This expressive bronze is probably attributable to East Java and still shows links to the Central Javanese artistic tradition.
