According to Piet Meyer people used these “bateba” pendants to be protected against witchcraft etc. They come in various designs.

The gesture of putting one hand (or both) to the mouth serves to express grief and is characteristic of the type of “bateba yadawora”, the “sad bateba” (Meyer, 1981, p. 104).
