Description

wood, polychrome paint, raffia bast, plant fibre,
The Pende use masks “muya” that appear at festivities to entertain the village community. They embody different characters of the Pende society and appear in a wide range of variations.

The identification of a specific mask character depends largeley on aspects of the costume, including the headdress and acessories, and the choreography of the dance. Taken out of the ritual context, the exact type of a mask can therefore no longer be clearly determined.

The object Female mask “mbuya” with the object ID 3043980 was last part of the auction 89th Tribal Art Auction at July 7, 2018 on Zemanek-Münster Auction house and had the lot number 437.
