wood, greyish brown patina, elaborate coiffure, partly in openwork design, pupils and ears with drilled holes, slightly dam., cracks, rep. (lobe?), encrustations with clay;
the main purpose of the “egungun” society is to commemorate and revere the ancestors. The ancestors are expected to protect their descendants against danger, especially from witches and sorcerers, defend the reputation of the community and ensure that the traditional rules of conduct are observed. The ancestors come to the town in the form of “egungun” to cleanse the community of wrongdoing and misfortune. They are then known as “ara orun”, “visitors from the other world”.
