Description

wood, greyish brown patina, remains of polychrome paint, board-shaped superstructure, each side carved with three uniform mask faces with movable jaw (fixed by cord), drilled holes along side rim (for attachment of feather ornament), rising from fragmentary base, insect caused missing parts, strong abrasion of paint, cracks, base;
reminding of the typical round masks of the Eket, which belonged to the “ekpo” society and were used during yam festivals and funeral ceremonies.
