wood pipe stem, with cuff from colorful dyed grass strips and tufts from red horse hair, red catlinit pipe head with lead inlay, handwritten collection number “19 8502”, min. dam., slight traces of usage, small missing parts.
A pipe and the associated accoutrements are important tools in the spiritual life of traditional Plains Natives. Used for prayer, a man’s pipe provides a means of connecting to the spirit world.
