Description

multi-part necklace with a central pendant in the characteristic shape, made of gilt brass, decorated with red gemstones (blood jasper) and turquoise, on a leather strap with figural and floral elements, strong signs of wear

This necklace was worn exclusively by the girl-priestesses of the Nepalese “kumari” cult, who were worshipped as the reincarnation of the patron goddess “taleju”. The “kumari” were selected and trained for this office in infancy and enjoyed the highest reverence. After their first menstrual bleeding, they were considered impure and had to leave the temple.

Complete original and worn “tayo” ceremonial necklaces are extremely rare!
