These large freestanding bird sculptures represent hornbills (kalao).
They belong to the “children of the poro” and are said to have been exclusively kept in the hidden grove of the “poro”. Their function is said to have been the protection of the grove and the initiates. According to another source, they also played a prominent role in the initiation rites themselves and were called “sibi”.
