Description

wood, encrusted greyish brown patina, long pointed nose, broad open mouth, min. dam., cracks, slight traces of abrasion, on base;
“soko mutu” mask dancers were costumed with a tapa cape, wig and beard from the pelt of the colobus ape. They were looked upon as frightening characters. Their apparently grinning mouth promised rage and disaster and reminded of the fears of death.Over 100 years. Artist and wood unknown.


The object Apes mask “soko mutu” with the object ID 3033465 was last part of the auction 70th tribal art auction at September 8, 2012 on Zemanek-Münster Auction house. The object with the lot number 399 achieved a sales price of EUR 1,300.
