A comparable mask with this unusual disc-shaped framing of the face and the crowning bird motif can be found in the exhibition catalogue on Art from the Ivory Coast (Vevey, 1969, p. 135).
The mask belonged to the male “dié” society. At large festivals, in which several villages could participate, masks of this kind appeared in groups of up to ten dancers.
The object Anthropomorphic mask with crowning bird with the object ID 3046510 was last part of the auction 94th Tribal Art Auction at March 7, 2020 on Zemanek-Münster Auction house. The object with the lot number 185 achieved a sales price of EUR 650.
