This mask possibly represents the spirit being “moghondzi”, which announced by the sound of drums, appears only by night.

According to J. Bonhomme these “moghondzi” are dead ancestors coming back to visit living people.


The object Anthropomorphic face mask with the object ID 3046178 was last part of the auction 93rd Tribal Art Auction at November 16, 2019 on Zemanek-Münster Auction house. The object with the lot number 239 achieved a sales price of EUR 4,400.
