Description

brass, a cuff of 14 cm in height and 8 cm in diameter, at half height enclosed by a projecting disc, decorated with fine punched and incised geometrical ornaments, open on one side, with slightly overlapping endings, fine crack;
up to the 1920s it was in fashion for Igbo-girls and -women of higher ranks, to wear such “ogba” around their ankles. This definitely caused a clumsy way of going, which nevertheless became a status symbol by itself, even imitated at a time these anklets were no longer in use.


The object Anklet “ogba” with the object ID 3034402 was part of the auction 72nd tribal art auction on March 9, 2013. The object with the lot number 342 achieved a sales price of EUR 900 with an asking price of EUR 400.
