Description

in two linen-covered slipcases,

a) large slipcase: 17 photographs mounted on original cardboard, cardboard dimensions mostly 25 cm x 32 cm, photographs in various sizes
b) small slipcase: 18 photographs mounted on original cardboard, cardboard dimensions mostly 20 cm x 25 cm, photographs in various sizes

The cardboard mounts were numbered by Hans Meyer. The handwritten notes in graphite concerning the provenance of the objects on the reverse are later additions.

The photographs are unique originals produced around 1897/98. The seven photographs of the framed Benin plaques (in the large slipcase) were commissioned by Hans Meyer. A corresponding handwritten note appears beneath the photograph of a Benin plaque depicting a warrior in the small slipcase (without number).

Attached are two lists indicating the museums where the objects are currently located.


The object 35 original photographs of Benin objects from the Hans Meyer Collection with the object ID 3052679 was last part of the auction Auction 106 at April 25, 2026 on Zemanek-Münster Auction house. The object with the lot number 310 achieved a sales price of EUR 1,200.
