The cardboard mounts were numbered by Hans Meyer. The handwritten notes in graphite concerning the provenance of the objects on the reverse are later additions.

The photographs are unique originals produced around 1897/98. The seven photographs of the framed Benin plaques (in the large slipcase) were commissioned by Hans Meyer. A corresponding handwritten note appears beneath the photograph of a Benin plaque depicting a warrior in the small slipcase (without number).
