The provenance of this excellent Malagan figure from New Ireland dates back to 1899. Dr. Albert Hahl, until then Imperial Judge in Herbertshöhe, donated it to the Linden Museum before he, appointed Vice Governor, moved to Ponape in Micronesia. In exchange with the museum, this masterpiece came into the possession of Ludwig Bretschneider in 1959.
We are pleased to present this and other works from historic Pacific collections, including the Henry Erfeling and Hubert Geisler collections.
The Jolika collection of the collecting couple John and Marcia Friede is considered one of the finest private collections of New Guinea art today. Fourteen works – primarily prehistoric stone objects from the Highlands of New Guinea, all published – will be auctioned on November 15th.
Further highlights await you, including the African collection of Werner and Lotte Krause, as well as ancient American ceramics from the Schirmer Collection.
This auction also places particular emphasis on prehistoric idols and ritual objects from the Bronze Age.
More details to follow soon…
The 2-volume catalogue is expected to be sent on October 27 - and is then also online available.
